USA Basketball announced Monday that Duke head coach Kara Lawson will lead the women's national team through the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Throw in the fact Lawson coached Team USA to gold in the women's 3x3 tournament in the 2020 Olympics, and she's a natural candidate to succeed Cheryl Reeve. Taking charge of the senior women's team is a somewhat thankless task, given the absurdly high standard the U.S. has maintained on the court. The 1992 Olympics are the last time the United States failed to win gold, and that's the same year Team USA suffered its last Olympic defeat. But a first-place finish remains the expectation, and that's especially true with a Summer Games hosted by the United States.
