If you’re busy and paying attention to important things on the road, you have little left over for reading road signs. All road signs distract, even the ones you can read. If they take longer to parse, they distract more. It’s noise and sorting useful information from noise uses up our brain power and leaves less of it for driving .</p><br /><p>If it’s just a scramble of letters in another language, it takes time to dismiss. We do a much better job of bilingual signs than the welsh as our signs try to make the two languages typographically distinct but for people seeing them only occasionally and maybe not a native english speaker either, they’re an added danger on our roads.</p><br /><p>Think of badly designed signs as three noisy kids in the back of the car fighting over whether mam or dad is the best driver.</p>
