Opinion: “There isn’t an Australian community that isn’t impacted by climate change … and there isn’t an Australian individual for whom those impacts won’t be real and material.”This is the reaction of our neighbour’s minister for climate change, Chris Bowen, to the release last week of Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment.
The reaction from Bowen and Albanese is a far cry from our Government’s downplaying or rejection of advice from our equivalent organisation, the Climate Change Commission.
This goes against the Climate Commission’s recommendation that reducing methane emissions by 35-47 percent below 2017 levels is consistent with holding temperature below 1.5C warming.
The Climate Change Commission had shown plausible pathways to 69 percent cuts but even that may be insufficient.
Lawyers for Climate Action NZ Inc has challenged the Climate Change Commission on the basis that it is insufficient for the 1.5C target.
