Another former Macron prime minister has formally announced his bid - Gabriel Attal, a 37-year-old Macron protegee who became France's young prime minister in 2024 as well as the country's first out gay prime minister. The Communist party is part of the united left, but has not yet confirmed its candidate, although it is likely to be party leader Fabien Roussel. The former LR senator, who served in François Bayrou's government as interior minister, Bruno Retailleau was elected party president in May and has now confirmed that he will be the party's 2027 candidate.
