I read with interest Commander Viscovich's frankly apocalyptic view of a trans-Atlantic naval future with interest. Frankly, I think he overblows the "rupture" of US/NATO relations, the ability or willingness of our NATO allies to invest heavily into Naval forces (both a strategic military economic level, and within the glaring capability gaps in other warfare domains that the EU recently highlighted in a White Paper and the ability to replicate the massive investments of the American taxpayer to date in Trans-Atlantic security since 1917. The public desire/diplomatic cajoling of our NATO allies to increase their defense spending, including in Naval capability/capacity isn't an innovation of recent days and months. Rather, in its most recent form, the Commander correctly points to the Obama Administrations Pivot to the Pacific, and the strong statements of outgoing SECDEF Gates on NATO becoming a two-tiered alliance. This both clear policy change, and frank cri de coeur from Secretary Gates were fundamentally ignored by many in Europe for far too long.
