Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced plans to permanently relocate the refuse dumpsite situated along the busy Port Harcourt Airport–Obiri-Ikwerre Road, describing its current location as a health hazard and a damaging “gateway image” for visitors arriving in the state capital. The location is now under consideration as a permanent refuse disposal site for the state. Fubara, who was accompanied by the Chairman of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, and its Managing Director, Dr Ibimina Wokoma, said the current dumpsite posed serious environmental and health risks. Fubara praised the Rivers State Waste Management Agency for what he described as a more proactive approach to refuse management across the state. According to him, the agency’s current efforts were yielding visible improvements, though the relocation of the dumpsite was necessary to consolidate progress.
