My employer ‘forgot’ to report my 3 years of HSA contributions to the IRS, now I’m being audited

I’ve never touched the contribution settings, and everything appeared correct on my pay stubs and in my HSA bank portal.
Turns out, our payroll provider never actually marked the contributions as pre-tax.
They were coded as post-tax “after-tax savings,” but still reported to the HSA bank as employer contributions.
So the IRS thinks I made excess contributions without a qualifying plan, which triggered the audit.
Do I just hire a tax professional, or can my employer fix this quickly enough to prevent the penalties?
