While I agree that more pharmacists should become engaged in providing birth control,, it is not as simple as just deciding to "do it". The law does not require pharmacists or pharmacies to provide birth control- it allows it IF the pharmacist has received the training (continuing education) to do so. Unfortunately the law did not require insurance companies or MediCal to pay for the pharmacist time to provide the service- that has been the biggest hang-up. A law was passed in 2016 and became effective in January 2017 REQUIRING MediCal to pay for the service however the state has failed to create a process for paying for the service. Women should demand their insurance companies and MediCal cover the pharmacist provided birth control services. Women should contact their legislators and demand action on coverage for the pharmacist services and for action on coverage for a12 month supply of birth control which also went into effect over a year ago and is still not being appropriately covered by insurance companies.
