Rededicated: The renovated and enlarged baptistry on Nov. 14, 1997, by President Hinckley, then Church president; the entire renovated temple on May 1, 2011, by President Thomas S. Monson, Church president. Three more notes: In 1977, a temple was originally announced for Pago Pago, American Samoa, a central location to serve Latter-day Saints in the South Pacific islands; however, the First Presidency’s April 2, 1980, announcement to build seven temples in as many nations included temples in Tahiti and Tonga and a move of the temple from a site in Pago Pago on the U.S. territory island to Apia, Samoa.
