Today, one year ago, on 14 July 2024, the revised EU Anti-Trafficking Directive entered into force, marking a significant step forward in the EU’s response to human trafficking. The revised Directive introduced several changes, including making it mandatory for member states to criminalise the knowing use of services of trafficked people, which was previously optional. One year on, Member States still have until July 2026 to fully transpose the revised Directive into national law. On 10 June 2025, the Dutch House of Representatives approved the bill “Modernisation and Expansion of the Criminalisation of Human Trafficking,” which amends the national legal framework to align with the new EU requirements. As the transposition process continues, La Strada International calls on all Member States to ensure a timely and effective implementation of the revised Directive.
