Recent approval of IEC 60335-2-40 standard for increasing the charge sizes of flammable refrigerant is not expected to see immediate changes in the type of HVACR products on the marketA draft International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard for increasing higher flammability refrigerant in domestic cooling systems could be some way from impacting manufacturers’ products, says a FETA expert. A prominent association member said it was uncertain how IEC 60335-2-40 may impact product development if it is codified into national laws. Graham Wright, legislation and compliance manager with Daikin and an active member of a number of FETA groups, said the overall significance of the IEC standard would depend on how manufacturers decided ultimately to use the guidance. This could accelerate the potential shift towards higher flammability refrigerant. Based on proposals for increasing the charge sizes of hydrocarbons for certain uses under the standard, Mr Wright noted that there was potential for new types of system to be developed.
