Majority of MEPs sitting on environment committee have backed commitments to further cut HFC use this decade with the position to be adopted by the European Parliament for further debateThe European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) has approved proposals for implementing a stricter F-Gas phasedown process. However, a majority of MEPs on the committee voted in favour of the amendments that will now be put forward for adoption by the European Parliament later this month. The ENVI Committee report, supported by political groups across the spectrum, now goes to the European Parliament for adoption before trialogue negotiations with the Council. The campaign group claimed that the committee’s approved proposals contained contingencies to ensure the phasedown was compatible with other European environmental legislation. Tim Grabiel, a senior lawyer and policy advisor for the EIA, welcomed the decision of the European environment committee to approve plans for stricter phasedown requirements.
