Shirley Anderson passed away on September 9 in Norman, Oklahoma. She was born Shirley Leone Dennis on June 18, 1937, in Bozeman, Montana, to Leone Treat Dennis and Hubert Eugene Dennis. She was predeceased by sister Carol, and brother Hubert, Jr. (Bub), and is survived by her brother Bill, of Longview, Texas, as well as her sons and their families, Scott Carmack and wife Tracy, of Norman, and David Carmack, wife Lisa and daughter Matisse, of Holliston, Massachusetts. After graduating Gallatin County High School in Bozeman in 1955, Shirley attended Oklahoma Christian College in Bartlesville for one year, where she met and married William Carmack in 1956. She completed her degree at the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a BA in Speech Therapy in 1961. They spent two years in the Washington DC area before returning to Norman. Shirley went on to earn an MEd in Special Education and Early Childhood Education from Texas Women's University in 1975, and an MSW in Social Work from OU in 1985. Shirley moved to Galveston, Texas, in 1985 to serve as a pediatric social worker at the University of Texas Medical Branch for the next 16 years. She took leave in 1991 to serve three years in Kingston, Jamaica, for the U.S. Peace Corps, where she met and married John Anderson, also from Texas. Shirley was an avid volunteer her whole life, giving her time to the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for foster children. Shirley and John retired to a house they built on twelve acres in Washington County, Texas. John passed away in 2018, at which time Shirley moved back to Norman. Her life, lived in service to others, is an inspiration and source of pride to her sons. A memorial will take place in the coming months.
