Nearly 400,000 Arizonans pay less each month for health insurance because of premium tax credits from the federal government as part of the Affordable Care Act, but the funding for those credits is set to expire at the end of this year. Republicans nonetheless approved the largest-ever cuts to Medicaid over the summer, which will see an estimated 15 million Americans lose health care coverage. Some 92% of people who get their health insurance through the marketplace rely on tax credits. Health care advocates fear that could lead to people foregoing coverage rather than pay the elevated premiums, resulting in more emergency room visits and increasing the cost of the health care system for everyone — including those who have private health insurance through their employers — as hospitals absorb more costs. Stanton urged Republicans to act to prevent the negative outcomes of leaving millions without health care coverage.
