But it remained an element of the faith that sometimes did not sit well with the idea that Jesus was the divine Redeemer and the apocalpse and Jesus’ “second coming” to this day are often shuffled off to a distant or at least undetermined future time, with emphasis placed on reported sayings of Jesus about how “that day and hour no one knows” (Matt 24:36). In his 1910 masterpiece The Quest of the Historical Jesus, Albert Schweitzer traced the scholarship on who the historical Jesus was from the eighteenth century attempts at gospel harmonisation to the Historical Jesus Quest his own day, and decided that the idea of Jesus as an eschatological prophet preaching a coming apocalypse was the inevitable conclusion that had to be drawn.
