If you ever hear anyone wonder why tiny Portland, Maine, has such an outsized reputation in the “foodie” world, tell them two things: First, almost every Portlander would recoil to be associated with a term as trend-driven as “foodie”; and second, the root of our deep and wide love of food lies in a philosophy ingrained in Maine itself. The state’s proudly close-knit community of small farms, working waterfronts, and independent restaurants are long-held traditions that predate (and frankly, eclipse) hype phrases like locavorism.
