Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Monday that Russia is prepared to adhere to the New START Treaty for an additional year — the last remaining nuclear control pact between Russia and the United States, which is set to expire in February. President Donald Trump has often mentioned the threat of nuclear weapons as a concern, and he is likely to view Putin’s move in positive terms. The treaty limits Russia and the U.S. to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers. But Moscow assured that it would continue to respect the limits on nuclear weapons set by the treaty. In August, Trump deployed two nuclear submarines into tactical positions after former Russian president Medvedev made online threats.
