Minnesota signed Cabrera, 28, to a minor league contract on Thursday after the Pittsburgh Pirates designated him for assignment 10 days prior. The Tampa Bay Rays signed Cabrera, who hails from the Dominican Republic, to a minor-league contract in 2013. In five seasons with St. Louis, Cabrera posted a 4.14 ERA with 198 strikeouts and 101 walks in 189 1/3 innings. After electing free agency, Cabrera signed a deal with the Chicago Cubs, where he struggled with an 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.
