Elise Miller Schnure lived a wonderfully fulfilling life and passed away on September 4, 2025, at the age of 102. She was born June 11, 1923, to Ralph James Miller and Florence Lindstrom Miller in Cleveland, Ohio. The family moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., when she was two years old and she lived there until shortly before turning 100. She married fellow Bucknellian Frederick Oscar Schnure (Class of 1942) on June 14, 1947, and together they raised four beautiful children in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon. They lived in Belgium in 1950 when their first two children were two years old and two months old, where Fred helped rebuild the Belgian steel industry that had been devastated in World War II. They formed close lifelong friends while in Belgium. Elise was very active in the leadership of numerous volunteer organizations. During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, she led efforts tutoring underprivileged students in a predominantly black inner-city school in Pittsburgh, hosted international students, and, after the fall of Saigon in 1975, she helped a Vietnamese family settle in Pittsburgh. Elise was always interested in foreign languages, becoming fluent in German and conversational in Spanish so she could speak to local people as she and Fred traveled extensively, especially during retirement. After Fred died in 2010, she remained in their retirement community, where she and George Akerhielm (Bucknell Class of 1950) became late-in-life companions. In 2023, three months before turning 100, she moved to Vermont to be near one daughter and her family. On her 100th birthday, she threw out the first pitch for the Burlington, Vermont, minor league baseball team, the Lake Monsters. Her children all felt fortunate to have had her for so many years. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Christine Schnure Dotterer (Richard Butcher), Frederick William Schnure (Christina Hutton), Dorothy Anne Schnure (Willem R. Leenstra), and Calvin David Schnure (Malathi Jayawickrama), nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral and Cremation Services.
