Luke Harold Kauffman passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025 at Nottingham Village in Northumberland, PA. He was 85 years old. He graduated from Mahanoy Joint High School in 1958, and earned his Bachelor's degree from Lycoming College in 1962 and his Master's degree from Bucknell University. While in high school, Luke lettered in basketball and baseball, and was elected to the Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. In college, he was elected to the Lycoming College Sports Hall of Fame. Luke devoted his entire career to teaching biology at his alma mater, now Line Mountain High School in Herndon, PA. He was fiercely proud of his Pennsylvania German ancestry and shared his love of the language and culture with high school and college students. He continued to speak 'Pennsylvania Dutch' to old-timers, including residents in the Schwaben Valley and those in the Northumberland nursing home. He was the primary caretaker of his mother, Pearl Mary Schreffler Kauffman, and his father, Woodrow Ambrose Kauffman, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by two sisters: Barbara Kauffman Yerger (husband Donald Yerger) their sons Philip and Andrew, wife, 3 children; his sister, Karen S. Kauffman; and a daughter, Felicia Mullen. His sister, Sharon Kauffman Kugler, twin of Karen, predeceased him by several months. She died on May 7, 2025.
