Converted e-bikes will now be banned from being taken on trains in NSW due to the increased risk of lithium-ion battery fires. From November 1 those who bring a converted e-bike onto any service on the NSW rail network will face a $400 fine with a maximum penalty of $1,110. To support the ban there will be random checks, with passengers asked to not bring any converted e-bikes onto NSW rail network ahead of November 1. Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray said safety experts had been monitoring the increased risks associated with converted e-bikes and that the ban was a “sensible approach”. “Put simply, the idea of blocked aisles, confined spaces and battery fires from risky devices don’t mix.”
