Award-winning author and public speaker Kaitlin Curtice visited East Ward Elementary School, engaging students in a meaningful exploration of Native American culture and storytelling. Curtice, an enrolled citizen of the Potawatomi Nation, read from her children’s book Winter’s Gifts: An Indigenous Celebration of Nature, which highlights the beauty of winter through Indigenous wisdom. The event sparked thoughtful discussions on themes of cultural identity, community, and respect for nature, offering students a unique opportunity to connect with an Indigenous perspective. “It’s really special to share during Native American Heritage Month, for students to see an Indigenous person and know that our cultures are still thriving and special to us,” said Kaitlin Curtice. The event also aligns with DASD’s focus on recognizing Native American Heritage Month throughout November and expanding awareness of Indigenous cultures.
