This set of photographs shows signer, musician and radio personality Roy Raymond Faulkner (1911-1981). Faulkner became known as the "Lonesome Cowboy" at the age of seventeen when he performed on Dr. John Brinkley's Milford, Kansas radio station know as KFKB, (Kansas First, Kansas Best). In addition to singing, Roy played a number of musical instruments from the musical saw, guitar, violin, and harmonica. As a popular performer he worked at several Midwest radio stations including WIBW in Topeka, Kansas and KFKB. Brinkley later relocated his radio station to Del Rio, Texas. During Brinkley's run for Kansas Governor in the 1930s, Roy appeared at Brinkley's campaign rallies where Roy would sing his signature song, "Strawberry Roan." In addition to singing on the radio, Roy performed with the Riders of the Purple Sage and the Sons of Pioneers. He also went to Hollywood and made a few movie shorts as a member of a cowboy band. In 1950 Roy retired from the entertainment business. He passed away on April 18, 1981 in Topeka, Kansas at the age of sixty-nine.
