Kansas Historical Society, Library and Archives
A Kansas Memory: The Kansas Historical Society Library and Archives Podcast
When Samuel Reader moved to Kansas Territory in May of 1855, he continued chronicling his life and adventures during the "Border Wars". He was a self-trained artist and included illustrations and watercolor paintings in his journal.
Reader joined General James Lane militia and participated in the Battle of Indianola in September, 1856.
His journal and story provides a unique look at the violence that erupted along the Missouri and Kansas border preceding the Civil War.
