But a startling revelation was that an animal, specifically the torpedo fish Torpedo torpedo, could produce and deliver a shock just like one from a Leyden jar. Other electric fish were discovered, and later classified into the strongly electric, and weakly electric fish (Figure 1). [1]Eventually the mechanism by which the torpedo fish produced its shock was deciphered by John Walsh who was awarded the Copley medal “For his Paper on the Torpedo”. A more refined strategy is used by the also ‘strongly electric’ electric eel when hunting. Electric fish usually specialize to live in either freshwater or saltwater; freshwater conducts electricity poorly and saltwater conducts electricity well.
