Why 'la rentrée' means so much more in France than a new school year
[]
The Local France
La rentrée scolaire is when schools begin again for the new academic year - this year that happens on Tuesday, September 1st. With the sense of the new start, many people make resolutions or decide to take up a new hobby or activity in September - classes and groups often hold open days or publish their details in the town directory to take advantage of all those people returning refreshed and relaxed from their holidays, determined to get fit/learn an instrument/become fluent in another language etc. This year, la rentrée politique also marks the start of election campaigns for the 2027 presidential election - although some candidates have been campaigning over the summer (and others low-key campaigning for years), the race itself will step up a gear in September.
