After the student completes the compulsory secondary school (MS), they can attend a pre-vocational school or further academic secondary school, school of intermediate vocational education, or higher vocational school, depending on their educational targets. These routes usually take pupils through the eighth school year, so they still have a ninth compulsory school year to complete. Austria's current framework calls for children who need support in the language of education to receive targeted and individual help from the start of their time in an elementary educational institution, with a particular focus on the final two years before compulsory school.
