Canada is the latest country to open its own pooled fund for journalism, joining a wave of countries across the world. The Media Forward Fund in Germany, Austria and Switzerland followed in 2024, with a collective 11 million euros pooled from a network of 20 foundations. Pooled journalism funds have also emerged in Brazil, Colombia, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, and Palestine. Just like their global counterparts, Canada’s funding decisions will be done separately, via an independent jury with experience of Canada’s journalism sector. The Fund will fund two to seven journalism organisations.
