The three anti-bike theft programs currently used by the UOPD are a “bait bike” program, a community awareness program and enhancements in security around bike cages. A majority of the bicycles that have been stolen on campus, Chief Wade said, are registered with the Project 529 program, which is run through UO Transportation Services and gives UOPD a better chance of recovering or gaining information on stolen bikes. “(The program) allows the Eugene Police Department, Springfield, Lane County and other nearby agencies — (if they) run into our thieves and run the serial numbers on the bikes, we have a better chance to at least recover the bike or recover parts of the bicycle, as we’ve seen some of them chopped up,” Chief Wade said.
