This year, the Lido will host the 83rd edition, with George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn set to receive The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and a roster of A-listers including Robert Pattinson, Dakota Johnson, Penélope Cruz, Alicia Vikander and Guy Pearce descending on the island. While the Venice Film Festival is, funnily enough, all about film, the fashion is almost as important, with the great and good treating its endless red carpets as an opportunity to one-up each other in archival finds. We need only cast our minds back to last year, when Amal Clooney attended the Jay Kelly premiere in a fuchsia Jean-Louis Scherrer gown from autumn/winter 1995, while Chloë Sevigny swept the After the Hunt carpet in a Saint Laurent puffball skirt from spring/summer 2018.
