U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is moving to equip thousands of its agents with electric shock gloves, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice detailing a planned $20 million contract. While electric gloves have been utilized on a smaller scale by local law enforcement and detention centers, ICE’s purchase would represent the largest procurement of the technology to date. Representatives from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) raised alarms over the potential for abuse, noting that the gloves allow officers to deploy pain discreetly with minimal oversight or advance warning to the public.
