The Harm Reduction Society of Kenya has called on the government to reduce the cost of pesticides used by farmers and strengthen regulations to protect consumers from highly hazardous chemicals. The organisation says making safer pesticides more affordable would help farmers move away from harmful products while ensuring that pesticides available in the Kenyan market are properly labelled and regulated. According to Dr. Nashon Okanga, an executive member of the Harm Reduction Society of Kenya, more than 70 percent of pesticides used in the country are harmful, raising concerns about the safety of food produced and consumed by Kenyans.
