GOSHEN [mdash] Thelma Joan (Smeltzer) Elion, 92, Goshen, died at 9:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born Feb. 1, 1933, in Madison Township, St. Joseph County, to John and Ida (Culp) Smeltzer. On Dec. 2, 1966, she married Charles Kent Elion; and he died on April 5, 1999. Surviving are her two children, Scot (Angie) Elion, Goshen, Joyce (Eugene) Stewart, Elkhart; a stepson, Mark (Brenda) Elion, Wolcottville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith (Vernon) Hyche, Elkhart. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Charles; son, Lyn J. Elion; stepson, Charles Kurt Elion; and six siblings. Thelma was a 1951 graduate of Goshen High School and attended Goshen College for two years. She worked at GL Perry's, Elkhart, Unitog Laundry Services and later retired from Goshen Rubber in 1997. A member of First Baptist Church, Goshen, Thelma enjoyed listening to and singing hymns; but most of all she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Family was very important to Thelma. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also liked gardening and playing bingo. Private family services will be held.
