In lieu of the unexplained artificial gravity generators seen in popular science fiction shows like Star Wars, Weir instead equips the Hail Mary with two plausible methods of producing artificial gravity: continuous acceleration and a rotating centrifuge. At this point, Weir makes the theoretical leap that neutrinos are majorana particles, meaning that each neutrino is its own antiparticle, allowing neutrinos to annihilate and produce photons at the Petrova wavelength. Weir resolves this by introducing “super cross sectionality,” meaning that the rate at which the neutrinos interact with the Astrophage’s body is very high, so the Astrophage can keep the neutrinos inside until they annihilate.
