The University of Michigan is testing out a pilot program that will change their first semester grading to a pass/fail system for certain freshman students with the aim of easing the acclimation process and supporting mental health. Starting in fall 2027, first-year students enrolled in Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts will be assessed under the "grade covering" pilot program and receive either a passing grade or no credit on their transcript. Then, beginning in their second semester, students will receive standard grading on their transcripts, and those grades will be reflected in GPAs for the rest of the student's enrollment.
