In a significant event at Miami's El Espacio 23, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara revealed the artwork he created during his five-year term as a political prisoner in Cuba. Otero Alcántara publicly denounced on social media that the Cuban State Security had confiscated and censored a substantial number of his works due to their political or sexual themes, while many pieces made with limited materials remained in prison. El Espacio 23, a Miami cultural institution linked to collector Jorge Pérez, had previously organized exhibitions featuring Otero Alcántara's works in Miami and at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Gallery in Mexico City.
