A First Nations chief in Alberta shares his concerns that the province is not doing enough to prepare for the potential revenue losses as the online gambling market opens. The iGaming market launched in July, and 2% of the market’s gross revenue (bets placed minus paid-out winnings and deductions) is planned to go to First Nations groups in an attempt to soften the blow of casino revenue losses, said the Minister of Service Alberta Dale Nally. According to the province’s website, the Alberta government received input from First Nation partners on its online gambling legislation plans in 2024, as Nally said to CBC News that the province invited every First Nation in Alberta to be part of the online gambling legislation talks, but Mercredi thinks consultations were limited.
