Meanings of Ceasefire
['Zinaida Miller']
LRB blog
Since 2007, when Israel imposed its blockade on Gaza – two years after it withdrew from the enclave, and shortly after Hamas took over – the conflict’s key dynamics have been defined by the blockade itself, intermittent escalations, and repeated ceasefires. Trump’s Twenty Point Plan, of which the ceasefire is only the first step, came with a new international guarantor (a Board of Peace effectively personalised under Trump and operating with little regard for international law), a projected stabilisation force and committees of verification. Israel would cease its attacks on Gaza; Hamas would decommission its weapons; Israel would withdraw from Gaza, first to the Yellow Line and subsequently from the entire territory.
