South Hill Town Council voted Monday to delay payment toward the proposed Country Lane/Route 58 Intersection Improvement Project after residents and Council members alike objected to plans to reroute traffic at one of the town’s busiest commercial stretches. Council tabled a previously-approved $575,761 appropriation from the town’s general fund budget to cover the town’s share of preliminary engineering costs after VDOT, which designed the Country Lane/Route 58 project, asked the town to release the money in the current fiscal year. Council members questioned the town attorney if the town could be responsible for sharing the costs associated with the project.
