On August 13, the New York–based Joan Mitchell Foundation named fifteen recipients of its 2026 Joan Mitchell Fellowship. The fellowships reimagine the foundation’s previous Painters & Sculptors Grants, which it inaugurated in 1994, annually awarding twenty-five artists unrestricted $25,000 grants. The 2026 recipients were chosen from among 169 applicants via a multiphase jury process. Representing twelve states, the 2026 fellowship cohort ranges in age from twenty-nine to seventy-nine. “We are thrilled to welcome the 2026 Joan Mitchell Fellows to the Foundation’s artist community, which ripples out from Joan Mitchell herself, whose legacy has now helped sustain the work of more than 1,300 artists nationwide,” said Christa Blatchford, the foundation’s executive director, in a statement.
