The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York reports a steep drop in enrollment since 2019 and the largest budget deficit in the school’s eighty-year history.
Artnews notes that enrollment has declined by 34 percent over the past seven years.
The school’s operating budget, which is about $200 million, relies on tuition and is facing a $22 million shortfall.
The information comes from an unreleased July 1 email from interim president Christopher J. Cyphers to faculty and staff.
The New School, which houses New York’s Parsons School of Design, laid off some ninety employees in June in response to a $50 million annual deficit.
