A Chinese ghost-hunting influencer has died at 24, one year after destroying a religious statue in a viral video to test whether she would be cursed. The creator, known online as Jiang Xiaorou, had amassed around 1.3 million followers on Douyin with videos exploring abandoned buildings, investigating alleged paranormal activity, and challenging folk beliefs. In August 2025, Jiang filmed herself smashing a statue of Guanyin, a Buddhist figure widely known as the Goddess of Mercy. The stunt was presented as an “anti-superstition” challenge intended to test claims that disrespecting the statue would bring divine punishment. However, there is no evidence connecting the statue stunt to the crash.
