More than 2,000 people have now died in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak, pushing the crisis toward the scale of the country’s deadliest episode on record.
This is the DRC’s 17th resurgence of the highly contagious disease and is already being described as the largest outbreak the country has faced.
New figures from Congolese health authorities put the toll at 2,011 deaths from 4,381 confirmed cases.
That total brings the current outbreak close to the DRC’s worst Ebola emergency, which ran from 2018 to 2020 and killed nearly 2,300 people out of 3,500 recorded cases.
The Ervebo vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective against the more common Zaire strain of the Ebola virus.
