11 August 1332: In the first major battle of the Second War of Scottish Independence, a force of Disinherited Scots and English troops led by Scottish pretender Edward Balliol and Henry Beaumont heavily defeated a much larger pro-Bruce Scottish army commanded by Donald, Earl of Mar, at the Battle of Dupplin Moor outside Perth. Mar’s forces launched a hasty assault on Balliol’s position, which led to a breakdown of their own formations. Ultimately, the Scots’ resolve crumbled, and the English and Disinherited men-at-arms mounted their horses to chase the fleeing Scots until nightfall. Perth was captured, the remaining Scottish forces scattered, and Balliol was subsequently crowned as King of Scots. Balliol’s reign was short-lived, and he was forced to flee to England after being defeated by Bruce loyalists at the Battle of Annan on 16 December.
