Malawi Ends Free South Africa Repatriation Scheme After 56,723 Return HomeThe Malawian government has ended its free transport programme for citizens returning from South Africa after the funds allocated for the emergency repatriation exercise were exhausted.
The programme, introduced amid concerns over xenophobic protests and attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, facilitated the return of 56,723 Malawians to their home country.
With the government-funded transport scheme now officially closed, Malawians seeking to return from South Africa will have to make and finance their own travel arrangements.
Officials, however, said consular assistance remains available to Malawian nationals living in South Africa.
The development marks the end of a major government-supported repatriation exercise aimed at providing safe transportation for citizens affected by insecurity and anti-foreigner tensions.
