John Betjeman could never claim to have been the most successful undergraduate at Magdalen College in Oxford, being described by his tutor, a young C S Lewis, as an “idle prig”. There were strong feelings that the Betjeman Society and the name of John Betjeman should be harnessed to mount a campaign to save churches. The summary ended: “We celebrated the many facets of John Betjeman, poet, writer, TV personality, architectural campaigner, lover of fun and the good things of life, all of which have their roots in his time as an undergraduate at Magdalen College.
