In Prairieland, Song’s trigger finger gifted the Trump administration a perfect justification for amping up his legal war on dissent. After the fireworks, Hill left the protest with a small group that did not include Song. But during the time the Prairieland defendants sat in Johnson County, waiting for federal charges to be filed, the country changed underneath them. In June, nearly a year after the protest, Hill was sentenced. Outside of D.C., he said, it’s uncommon for everyday civilians to encounter federal law enforcement — meaning that actions at protests are rarely liable for federal charges.
