If you enjoyed the Belfast Fleadh, RTE’s documentary on trad legend Donal Lunny is for you

Irish News
Whether on purpose or not, RTE’s timing was perfect in broadcasting this feature-length documentary on one of the great traditional Irish musicians, on the night after the closure of the most celebrated Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann ever.
Traditional Irish music has never been in a better place, and Lunny is one of its great heroes.
We got a generous interview from Christy Moore, who said Lunny was responsible for almost everything in Planxty, and even later in Moore’s solo career.
Lunny was attracted to the bouzouki, a Greek instrument which he had made with a flat, rather than round, bottom and adapted it for traditional Irish music.
Critics may now label this cultural appropriation, but it is normal to borrow, adapt and fuse with other traditions; Irish music has been excellent at it.
