Australia targets Google, Meta and TikTok with tougher news payment rules

The changes are aimed at distributing money from large technology companies more broadly across Australia’s news industry, including smaller and more diverse media organisations.
Under the revised system, technology platforms will face a levy equivalent to 2.5% of their Australian advertising revenue.
The revised legislation also guarantees that 5% of funds raised under the scheme will go to the Australian Associated Press (AAP), the country's national newswire.
Australia first introduced legislation in 2021 requiring major technology companies including Google and Meta to negotiate payments with news organisations whose content appeared on their platforms.
The system resulted in a series of commercial agreements between technology companies and Australian media organisations.
