The Sherwood apartment building is at 340 W55th Street and has housed various organizations in its 100 years. Photo suppliedThroughout the 20s, 30s and 40s, the New York Times regularly reported on youth conferences, gatherings of Christian leaders of different denominations and Sunday sermons happening at the NBI. In 1929 NBI president Don O Shelton bemoaned the loss of “intensity” and “urgency” in Christian evangelization. In the 70s, the building became the international headquarters for the Hare Krishnas and the local home for many members. Ellen Zalk and Gary Olson were married on the roof of the Sherwood, where residents recently to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building.
